United Kingdom : Balfour Beatty partners with Transport for London to upgrade vital underground network with new c. 220 million contract

Balfour Beatty announces that it has been appointed by Transport for London to deliver the new London Underground track renewals contract, valued at up to 220 million over four years.

The track renewals contract will ensure the continued reliability of the 1,047 kilometer London Underground network; investing in critical assets and the delivery of strategic enhancements such as renewing 13 kilometers of ballasted track and associated drainage, signalling, traction power and rail conductor works.

Balfour Beatty was first appointed to deliver track renewals on behalf of Transport for London in 2010, with the contract further extended in 2016 for an additional two years.

Balfour Beattys detailed knowledge and experience of London Undergrounds infrastructure and systems, as well as its commitment to championing I nnovation was instrumental in securing the contract.

Throughout the programme of works, Balfour Beatty will introduce new measures and technologies such as remote surveying systems and viewing software to generate significant efficiencies while continuing to safely deliver the highest standard of work and reducing any potential disruption to the travelling public.

Caroline Sheridan, London Undergrounds Director for Renewals & Enhancements, said: Track maintenance and renewal is an essential part of keeping London moving. This contract will help us to continue to provide better, more reliable journeys for our customers, while continuing to drive staff safety.

Works are due to commence in April 2019 with an option to extend the contract for a further six years in 2023. At peak, the project will employ a workforce of 300, including a number of apprenticeship and graduate opportunities.
