Bangladesh : DHAKA metro tender to be published on January 31

Publish Date : 30-Jan-2015

A tender to pre-qualify bidders for a contract to supply 24 six-car metro trains is to be published on January 31, said Mr Obaidul Quadar, Bangladesh's minister for road transport and bridges. But, still the estimated cost of the trains has to be approved by the Dhaka Metro Rail authority and Japan International Cooperative Agency (Jica) which is helping to fund the project. According to Quadar, in December, construction of the Bangladeshi's capital first metro line linking Uttara Third Phase, Agargaon, Farmgate and Motijheel will begin.

Completion of the first section from Uttara to Agargaon will be during December 2019, while completion of the entire project should be by 2024. At present, a Japanese consortium is working on the detailed design for the 20km 16-station elevated line, which would likely carry 60,000 passengers per hour. In 2012, approval was granted for the project for construction of the first metro line in Dhaka while the funding deal with Jica was signed in February 2013. Jica will be providing Taka 165.95bn ($US 2.1bn) while the Bangladesh government will fund the remaining Taka 53.9bn.
