India : TWO direct procurement centres for paddy commissioned

Publish Date : 30-Jan-2015

Two Direct Procurement Centres for paddy have been commissioned within 2km from Ekkatampalayam, Pasuvapatti and Ellaigramam. One centre was started at Veppili Pirivu along the Kangayam Road as per a demand by a group of farmers through a novel protest on Wednesday, and the other one is nearby Nallapadi, at the perceived insistence of a local ruling party functionary.

A protest was staged by farmers by carrying loads of paddy to the Collectorate complaining that Chennimalai AIADMK block secretary P. Gopalakrishnan was causing obstruction with the idea of getting the procurement centre sanctioned for the area at a place of his choice.
However, the district administration decided to fulfill demands arising from either sides. N.S.N. Nataraj, MLA, inaugurated both the centres, following which the number of procurement centres in the district has increased to 25.

Till last year, Chennimalai farmers were compelled to transport their produce to K.G. Valasu, more than 7km away, resulting in incurring of additional expenditure. Also, those farmers who decided to dispose off their produce at the fields to private parties faced exploitation as the procurement was made at the rate of Rs. 13 a kg compared to Rs. 14.70 a kg at the procurement centres operated by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation. At the procurement centres, the farmers are at a great advantage as they get cash for their produce on the spot.
