India : RE-TENDERING plans announced to find builder for VIZHINJAM port

Publish Date : 26-Feb-2015

On Tuesday, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy chaired a high level meeting that has planned to proceed with re-tendering to find a builder for the planned Vizhinjam port. Minister for Ports K.Babu said the CM will speak to the senior officials of the companies that had earlier expressed interest in building the port. The minister said : "It has been decided to re-tender the port project and it will be open for another 30 days. We will go ahead in the most transparent manner."

Kerala's ambitious Vizhinjam port project last Friday got a serious setback when all the three bidders in the fray failed to turn up.
Babu added : "We have no clue on what happened as those who had shown interest were keen to attend the tender process."
Tuesday's emergency meeting had the participation of Finance Minister K.M. Mani, Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty and other senior officials.

When it became the country's first port project to win a Rs.800 crore approval for viability gap funding from the Centre, the Rs.4,000 crore Phase I the project created history of sorts early in February. A number of companies, including Essar, Adani Ports and a group of SREI and Spanish company OHL had passed the initial muster for becoming eligible to participate in the auction. A source said the government will seek more bidders.
