United States : AECOM to provide project management consultancy services for the Indian Navy SeaBird project

Publish Date : 27-Feb-2015

Leveraging global expertise and local experience, AECOM will, over a 10-year period, manage and oversee the planning, design, contracting, construction and acceptance of the entire works.
Valued at US$3 billion, the project is one of the largest infrastructure projects for the Indian Navy and involves creation of a naval base at Karwar on the west coast of India. The redeveloped base will have a naval air station, expanded facilities to house more ships and submarines, residential complexes as well as other amenities.

Initiated in 1986 under Phase I, the base already has some facilities. Phase IIA will see expansion and improvement of the existing installations as well as construction of a new Naval Air Station.

Due to location, the project involves several technical and environmental challenges. “A significant amount of site work will have to be carried out as a portion of the area in the sea will be reclaimed," said Robert Parker, AECOM executive director, Project Seabird. "Additionally, the facilities have to be built on a hilly terrain. While these activities will call for AECOM’s technical expertise, our environmental experts will ensure the least disruption to the environment possible.”
