India : DECISION to procure PRV from SPAIN will boost INDIA's scientific expeditions in polar region

Publish Date : 27-Mar-2015

The ministry of earth sciences' decision of procuring a polar research vessel (PRV) from Spain that will be capable of navigating through 18,000 nautical miles of frozen waters and breaking ice as thick as 1.5 metres will give a boost to India's scientific expeditions in the polar region. Along with the PRV, 4 other vessels, including 2 that would assist coastal research, will be replaced in the next 3 years. India currently has a fleet of 6 such vessels.

The National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research, Goa has commissioned the new PRV, which is full of advanced features, and will be the most cutting-edge research vessel India will have. It will ease research expeditions in the polar region where several teams from the country, including those from Chennai's National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), have conducted studies. The new vessel would sustain 2 research stations -Maitri and Bharti -in Antarctica and the one in Norway, known as Himadri.

Ministry of earth sciences secretary, Shailesh Nayak said the PRV is being purchased at a cost of over Rs. 1,000 crore and that the government has selected a shipyard in Spain where the vessel will be built. An expert polar scientist said : "Usually, an ice-breaker vessel cuts across frozen seas to make way for another one (meant for research purposes) to follow. The PRV will do both. It will be the top notch research vessel in our country. Very few countries have such steps. In Asia, Japan and China have such vessels."
