Pakistan : FBR to install cameras on industrial units

Publish Date : 31-Mar-2015

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced that it will install cameras on the premises of industrial units of 5 chosen sectors — sugar, cement, fertiliser, beverages and tobacco — to measure their real time production and prevent billions of rupees tax evasion. Called electronic monitoring system for track and trace, this project's procurement and operational cost is expected to be multi-million dollars.

With the involvement of global bidders, the procurement process is ongoing to select a company which will be responsible for setting up cameras at production lines of the five selected industries all over the country and for monitoring the operational process of securing recording of visuals close to real time, guaranteeing it is safe and making it available for tax collectors.

Through the use of technology, this track and trace system would raise the tax earnings. The Chairman Tariq Bajwa-led FBR team, visited Turkey last week to understand their stamp system that helped the country to jump start their revenue collection significantly.

FBR Chairman Tariq Bajwa said that they had visited Turkey to study their whole taxation system, including this track and trace system
He added that Turkey had benefited from such electronic monitoring system and their system was more complete while in Pakistan, there was a need to achieve this aim.
