Japan : Nairobi Takes Delivery of New Master Plan

A Nairobi city master plan JICA handed over March 5, is set to decentralize services away from the central business district, widen and build roads, develop rail and improve water distribution.
Those are all flagship projects prioritized under the Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Master Plan (NIUPLAN) 2014-2030, which will transform the city into "a globally attractive city that is iconic for regional integration and sustainability," according to the official description.
Other priority projects in the plan, which was given to Nairobi County, include the development of new landfill sites and an improved storm water drainage system. The plan aims to ensure sustainable development and free the city of such challenges as serious traffic jams.
The plan will "harness the enormous economic potential, increase energy efficiency, reduce social inequity and create sustainable livelihoods for all," said Evans Kidero, the Governor of Nairobi.
The plan was developed between 2012 and 2014 through the Japan International Cooperation Agency's Project on Integrated Urban Development Master Plan for City of Nairobi. The project involved a consultative process that incorporated views from the private and public sectors, academia, political leadership and the general public.
