India : DELHI METRO makes changes for customer satisfaction

As the riders will get to see electronic displays inside coaches, streaming videos, comfortable seats replacing the staple steel ones, the daily Metro ride for the people of Delhi will soon become more colorful. Moreover, the coaches may also show ads on the roof.
These are some of the changes in design being introduced to please the customers and boost the advertisement revenue potential by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in the next batch of coaches, which will join the existing lot in carrying around 27-28 lakh people daily. The next batch of standard gauge coaches will also be a tad wider.
A reduction in noise level, faster acceleration, least resistance on friction braking are also included in the changes for customer satisfaction. The new lot of coaches will also be more energy-efficient, while the seats will be made of fibre-reinforced plastic material. With the delivery of another 648 under process, the 193-km Delhi Metro network has 1,282 active coaches. Tenders for a further 258 are also being concluded.
Suppliers that have provided coaches to Delhi Metro are groups of Mitsubishi, Hyundai Rotem and Melco with BEML as a sub-contractor; Mitsubishi Corporation, Hyundai Rotem, Melco and BEML; BEML and Hyundai Rotem; apart from Bombardier, BEML, Alstom, delivering independently. The procurement of rolling stocks for the Rs.3,200 crore Delhi Metro has come a long way since 2001, when large components had to be imported.
