H.E. Taeib Baccouche, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tunisia made a courtesy call on H.E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary General of ASEAN at the ASEAN Secretariat yesterday.

Minister Baccouche updated Secretary-General Minh on the recent political transition in Tunisia and the establishment of a new government since the election in 2014. As a member of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), he conveyed Tunisia's interest in forging closer relations with ASEAN and how AMU may benefit from the ASEAN model and experience. He congratulated ASEAN on its success in building a regional community despite the diversity of languages, cultures, religions and differing development status.

Secretary-General Minh informed Minister Baccouche of the formal establishment of the ASEAN Community by the end of the year and highlighted the importance of the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) to narrow the development gap between ASEAN member states. Secretary-General Minh also stressed the importance of the people-centred approach to ensure that the fruits of regional integration truly benefit the people. As such, ASEAN looks forward to working not just with its member states but also external partners in addressing emerging global issues that affect the livelihood of its people as well as to promote sustainable development.

Both sides agreed to explore ways to forge ASEAN-Tunisia cooperation and would continue to strengthen the Bandung Principal through the framework of Asia Africa Conference to advance Asia-Africa cooperation.
