New Zealand : AUCKLAND TRANSPORT shortlists three bidders for contract to operate commuter rail network

Publish Date : 28-Apr-2015

On 24 April, Auckland Transport (AT) announced shortlisting of three bidders for a contract to operate the city's commuter rail network from July 2016.

According to AT the bidders include Serco New Zealand, the network's current operator Transdev Auckland, and national railway KiwiRail.

AT has also announced to issue bid documents shortly for the performance-related contract, which will "reflect the huge changes in Auckland's passenger rail system since the current contract was put in place in 2003."

AT has executed a $NZ 1.6bn ($US 1.2bn) modernisation programme to include expansion of the network, electrification, and the introduction of new trains, during recent years.

CAF, by mid-April had delivered 50 of the 57 new AM class EMUs on order, with 42 trains provisionally accepted and 33 in service.

By mid-next month, plans are to introduce electric trains on all weekend services with the exception of the Pukekohe – Papakura line, and introduction of additional services on the Southern Line will be done in June.
