Publish Date : 05-May-2015

Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has signed the take-off of the projects in Abuja and also selected 10 Nigerian universities for a World Bank supported project, African Centre for Excellence (ACE) for research purposes in various fields such as Agriculture, Health, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

As per the selection, universities would get about N1.4 billion each for research.

He notified managements of the Nigerian universities selected to utilise funds allocated to them judiciously to meet the objectives of the project.

ACE project was instituted in 2013 by Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Republic of Benin, Ghana, Cameroun, Togo and Senegal to promote regional specialisation among universities in the participating countries to address common regional development challenges.

“The federal government would not hesitate to reallocate funds from non-performing centres to those that performed well,” he said.

“19 centres emerged from West Africa sub-region, out of which Nigerian universities won 10,” informed Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie.

Bayero University Kano (BUK), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU), Obafemi Awolowo University (AOU), Redeemers University, University of Port Harcourt and Benue State University were among the beneficiaries of the project.
