Zambia : ZAMBIA implements e-procurement system

Publish Date : 29-Jun-2015

Zambia has become one of the African countries in Africa are adopting electronic procurement systems in a bid to curb widespread corruption in bidding for public contracts, especially in the construction and telecom industries.

Kenya was the first country in the region to adopt an automated, end-to-end procurement and payment system in an effort to boost transparency, accountability and fairness.

The World Bank is offering financial and technical aid for e-procurement initiatives in several countries in Africa which includes Zambia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Mauritius, Cameroon, Uganda.

Zambia and Kenya have recently been asked to cancel telecom tenders worth multi-million dollar due to corruption in the way in which senior state officials offered contracts to suppliers. The central issue is that state officials receive kickbacks from suppliers to award contracts and inflate project costs.

Contracts for telecom projects in several other countries in the region, including Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Algeria, have also been hit with charges of corruption.
