India : STATE GOVT. forms task force to bring transparency in government procurement

The Maharashtra government has formed a high level task force to propose remedies to bring transparency in the process of state procurement, nearly a week after the irregularities in the Rs 206 crore purchase made by Maharashtra's Women and Child Development (WCD) Department were exposed.
Led by Principal Secretary (Expenditure) of Finance Department Sitaram Kunte, the task force, will comprise 5 senior IAS officials.
But, Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, has said the task force's appointment was not related to the controversy on the purchase by the WCD.
He said, "While presenting a white paper on the state’s financial condition in the Assembly I had assured that we will take measures to bring transparency in the procurement process. The task force is a next step to fulfil the assurance."
The Finance Department has also reduced the limit of purchase under the controversial rate contract system to Rs 50 lakh from Rs 1 crore.
