South Africa : GOVT. set to launch nuclear new-build procurement process

Publish Date : 08-Jul-2015

Responding to parliamentary questions, Energy minister Tina Joemat-Petterson has indicated that the government of South Africa plans to launch its nuclear new-build procurement process this month.

Joemat-Petterson was answering a question posed by shadow energy minister Gordon Mackay, who has questioned the level of transparency with which the procurement process will be conducted.

Mackay called the procurement process as "seemingly backward", and said that he would now request that the energy minister "fully disclose and make public the procurement process to be followed".

Joemat-Petterson had earlier said that the procurement process would start in Q2 of the current fiscal, with strategic partners expected to be chosen by the end of the financial year, in April 2016.

South Africa will build 9600 MWe of new nuclear capacity, aiming for the first new unit to go on line by 2023. To that end, the country has held meetings and workshops with would-be reactor suppliers from several countries.
