Publish Date : 06-Oct-2015

With wins for small entrepreneurs and South African school students, the 2015 South African International Renewable Energy Conference (SAIREC) was launched at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Sunday.

10 successful bidders from across the country - Adams Solar PV Project (Pty) Ltd, Bellatrix Solar PV Project, Du Plessis Solar PV4, Steynsrus PV2, Heuningspruit PV1, Steynsrus PV1, Klawer Wind Farm, Hopefield Community Wind Farm, George Small-Scale Biomass to Energy, and Busby Renewables (Biomass) - were declared as the winners of tenders for a stake in the national renewable power grid.

Minister of Energy Tina Joemat-Pettersson announced this on Sunday evening at a cocktail event to launch the SAIREC.

These were successful bidders in the Department of Energy's Small Projects Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

The department assigned 100 megawatts (MW) of the "3 725 MW to the procurement of small projects which, individually, have a maximum contracted capacity of 5MW,", through the programme.

Projects with a production capacity of between 1 and 5MW using technology, like onshore wind, solar photovoltaic, biomass, biogas, and landfill gas, were considered.

The minister said, "I congratulate all the winners and I encourage you to grow your businesses."

Also winning on the evening were students of various schools in South Africa. They had participated in an energy-related art competition.
