Nepal : Home Ministry not yet sure over purchasing riot-control gears through government-to-government procurement

Publish Date : 07-Oct-2015

The Home Ministry is not yet sure over purchasing the riot-control gears through the government-to-government procurement, a decision that the Cabinet made amid increasing violent protest in Tarai districts.

Nepal Police and Armed Police Force said they were still preparing specifications of materials like rubber bullets, batons, shields, riot control vehicles, water canons, among others, in spite of the budget being set aside for the procurement.

Ministry spokesperson Laxmi Dhakal said their subordinated bodies were assigned to follow up on the matter but conceded that they were not yet sure if the procurement process would go ahead.

Initially the procurement was proposed through government-to-government bid, a quick process that is done to purchase materials urgently.

The government has long been planning to buy riot-control gears and goods worth Rs 1 billion.

The materials valued at Rs650 million will be given to the Nepal Police, while the rest for the Armed Police Force.
