United Kingdom : PM - Govt. to invest 178B in defense procurement

Publish Date : 24-Nov-2015

British Premier David Cameron has announced the government's plans to invest a further 12 billion on defence equipment and support over the next 10 years.

Cameron will outline in the five-yearly National Security Strategy and Strategic Defence and Security Review, a total of 178 billion will invested to 'ensure the UK can respond to diverse threats.'

Boeing will provide 9 new P8 maritime patrol aircraft to offer maritime surveillance, anti-submarine and anti-surface ship warfare, as well as search and rescue and surveillance capabilities over land.

Two additional squadrons of Typhoon aircraft will be developed and equiped with new active electronically scanned array radar, providing a total of seven frontline squadrons each with 12 planes.

And 2 new 'strike brigades' which can be quickly deployed with a reduced level of logistics will be developed by 2025. They will make use of the Ajax range of armoured vehicles.

In the foreword to the review, Cameron has written that the defence budget is now back in balance, which will allow the government to boost investment in national security.

He said, "This is vital at a time when the threats to our country are growing. From the rise of ISIL and greater instability in the Middle East, to the crisis in Ukraine, the threat of cyber attacks and the risk of pandemics, the world is more dangerous and uncertain today than five years ago"

He added, "We cannot choose between conventional defences against state-based threats and the need to counter threats that do not recognise national borders."
