India : Maharashtra state agencies start cotton procurement

State agencies has started cotton procurement in Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra State Co-Operative Cotton Growers Marketing Federation ( MSCCGMF) has announced it has purchased around 39641 quintals so far in the current season.

At the start of the season, the federation had said that it was willing to buy up to 100 lakh quintals as against the 27 lakh quintals it had procured last season.

Chairman of the federation, NP Hirani, said around 34732 quintals of cotton has been bought from Nagpur and 4929 quintals from Aurangabad.

He said another 33,000 quintals has been purchased by traders.

The agency has established nearly 64 procurement centres in the state, including 25 centres in Nagpur and 29 in Aurangabad.

The federation, which is operated as a sub-agent of the CCI in Maharashtra, will buy cotton from farmers at Rs 4,100 per quintal.

For the 2015-16 marketing year, the government has fixed the MSP at Rs 4,100 per quintal for long staple cotton and at Rs 3,800 per quintal for medium staple.

Hirani said the amount will be credited directly into the bank accounts of farmers.
