Bangladesh : Govt. starts wheat procurement in Nilphamari district

Publish Date : 21-Apr-2016

The government has started wheat procurement in Nilphamari district and will continue it until the end of next month.

But frustration was generated among cultivators due to very low procurement volume amidst cheap prices of the product in the prevailing markets.

According to District Controller of Food (DCF) office sources, 2016's goal of wheat procurement in the district is 2202 tonnes out of which 814 tonnes would be purchased from Sadar Upazila, 134 tonnes from Syedpur Upazila, 481 tonnes from Domar Upazila, 271 tonnes from Dimla Upazila, 274 tonnes from Jaldhaka Upazila and 228 tonnes from Kishorgong Upazila.

Purchase price of wheat is Tk 28 per kg and acceptable moisture is 14%.

The government has started procurement from all the 7 Local Supply Depot (LSD) of six Upazilas of the district.

DAE sources said 2016's goal of wheat production in the district is 11525 tonnes in 4116 hectares of land.

Union Parishad (UP) Chairmen and cultivators are meanwhile frustrated over negligible amount of wheat procurement in the district by the government. Sources said prevailing price of wheat in the markets is Tk 650 per maund which is very low due to which the cultivators would not be benefited by growing the crop.

Chairman of Tupamari UP of sadar Upazila Musharat Ali Shah Fakir said his UP has been assigned just 25 tonnes of wheat to be bought by the government which is totally inadequate.
