The University of New Mexico announcement to bid on managing Sandia National Laboratories could set the institute up for a much expanded role in research and development.
UNM has announced that it's bidding with several partners, aligning the university with a trend toward more public-private management of large-scale nuclear facilities across the country.
The bid is expected to Battelle in a lab management role and Boeing in systems integration and engineering, and position UNM to expand its research and development role with Sandia, along with the University of Texas and Texas A&M University.
UNM President Robert Frank said 400 students and 2,400 graduates of the institute currently work at Sandia Labs, but UNM is looking ot grab 'a much bigger pie" and make the labs more New Mexico-centric.
