Thailand : EGAT seeks approval for construction of more renewable power plants, will acquire stakes in power plant abroad

Publish Date : 02-Jul-2016

In a bid to bolster national power-supply security, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) plans to request the energy regulator to allow it to build more renewable energy plants and to raise its power production proportion to half of the country's total production capacity.

Egat's new governor Kornrasit Pakchotanon said the agency's 100% owned subsidiary Egat International had entered talks to acquire stakes in a power plant abroad for about Bt10 billion.

Unlike other Egat arms like Electricity Generating and Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding, which were established with power-plant assets transferred from the holding company, Egat International does not have adequate equity or asset backup, making it hard to borrow or pursue project funding.

Hence the proposed acquisition, expected to be completed in September, will enable Egat International to obtain a revenue-generating asset and thus gain more flexibility to pursue other foreign projects in the future.
