India : Provision Of Cranes And Ambulances On National Highways

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, under the scheme National Highways Accident Relief Service Scheme (NHARSS) provides 10-ton cranes and small medium cranes for hilly areas and ambulances to States/ UTs for relief and rescue measures in the aftermath of accidents by way of evacuating road accident victim to nearest medical aid centre and for clearing the accident site.

During the year 2015-16, Ministry released the funds to the State Governments under NHARSS for procurement of 172 numbers of Basic Life Support Ambulance (BLSA) from DGS&D Rates, as under.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is implementing a scheme National Highways Accident Relief Service Scheme (NHARSS) under the scheme, 10-ton cranes and small medium cranes for hilly areas and ambulances are provided to States/ UTs for relief and rescue measures in the aftermath of accidents by way of evacuating road accident victim to nearest medical aid centre and for clearing the accident site.

In addition, Ministry has implemented a pilot project for providing cashless treatment of road accident victims on Gurgaon Jaipur and Vadodara Mumbai stretches of National Highways No. 8 and Ranchi Rargaon - Mahulia stretch of National Highway No. 33. Under the scheme, cashless treatment was provided to road accident victims for 48 hours at expenditure up to a limit of Rs. 30,000. GPS enabled ambulances connected with a central control room through a toll-free number 1033, were stationed at intervals of 20 km to transport the injured to the hospitals for treatment within the Golden Hour.
