A Chinese construction company has secured a contract for a key road renovation project in Western Kenya.

The Kenyan Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has selected Jiangxi Zhongmei Engineering Construction Company for the repair of the 40km Kakamega-Webuye road in the west of the country, at a cost of US $50 million.

Principal Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Engineer John Mosonik said the project will start soon and be completed in 2 years.

The project works include of rehabilitation and widening of the current road, building a second carriageway in the first 5km, and building service roads, access roads and market loops.

Mosonik invited bids from Chinese companies for projects in the country due to their acclaimed workmanship which has seen them securing tenders to undertake construction projects in Kenya.

The General Manager of Jiangxi Provincial Express Investment Group Co. Ltd, Ren Donghong said the company can implement the project.

She added, "We have done over 4,000km of roads in China and we will vie for more tenders as and when opportunities arise. The signing ceremony is a good starting point for Jiangxi to start undertaking projects in Kenya."
