India : Agriculture Department to provide logistical support to FCI to start procurement centres

At a meeting, chaired by Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Zulfkar Ali, the the process to establish Maize Procurement Centres in potential areas of the state by Food Corporation of India(FCI) was discussed.
The Minister asked for district wise details related to maize production, command area and sites to establish procurement centres (mandis) from the officers of Agriculture Department.
The Minister was told at the meeting that Rajouri yields nearly 1,10,713 MT maize annually including 80,640 MT in Poonch, 39,600 MT in Reasi, 9,039 MT in Samba and 65,379 MT in Kathua.
Zulfkar Ali said that the Department of Agriculture will provide logistical support to FCI to start these procurement centres in the state on trial basis for the first time.
He added the government has taken this measure to make the state self-sufficient and reduce reliance on neighbouring states for procurement of food grains, paddy and maize.
