India : India inks $737M ultralight howitzers procurement contract

India has inked a long-awaited $737 million deal to procure 145 M777A2 LW155 ultralight howitzers.

The country has signed the deal with the original equipment maker (OEM), the US arm of BAE Systems.

An official Foreign Military Sales (FMS) deal will be inked with the US government.

India wants to receive the delivered the guns as fast as possible.

BAE Systems joined hands with Indian private sector defense firm Mahindra Defence Systems to assemble 120 ultralight howitzers, and a remaining 25 of the guns will be delivered within the next 3 years.

The Indian Army has sought a total of 220 ultralight howitzers over the next 15 years.

According to the prescribed terms and conditions, BAE Systems will also establish an assembly integration and test plant here with Mahindra Defence Systems.
