Australia : ANU and DIBP strengthen ties

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) and the Australian National University (ANU) have signed a new agreement to cooperate on research, analysis, policy development and training.
The new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will focus on migration, migration economics, trade and customs, data analytics as well as cyber security and national security issues.
ANU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian Schmidt AC, and DIBP Secretary Michael Pezzullo signed the agreement today.
Professor Schmidt said ANU is a resource for the nation and this new agreement makes accessible to DIBP the full breadth and depth of ANU expertise and research on issues stretching from migration and population demographics, right across the spectrum to cyber security and national security
We are proud of our role as the national university, and I would like to see much more collaboration between ANU and policy makers, Professor Schmidt said.
This agreement will allow policy makers to further tap into ANU research and expertise to address the major challenges Australia is facing.
We have a proud history of collaboration with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. This agreement broadens that cooperation and I see it is the first of many such collaborative agreements with government and industry.
Mr Pezzullo said the ANU was a natural collaborative partner for the Department, adding expertise in public policy, economics, security, data management and engineering and computer science.
The Department of Immigration and Border Protections mission is to protect Australias border and manage the movement of people and goods across it, Mr Pezzullo said.
Our collaboration with ANU both widens the Departments research capabilities and will also ensure DIBP staff continue to have the best possible training opportunities to help ensure the best outcomes for Australia.
