India : Govt. implements DBT program for fertilisers in Una

Publish Date : 08-Dec-2016

The government of India has implemented the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) program for fertilisers in Una district.

The implications of the program will be that Una district farmers will receive cash subsidy in their accounts in a phased manner and they will have to procure fertilisers at market rates.

Currently, the farmers receive urea at subsidised rates.

In Himachal, the fertilisers are procured by agriculture societies at the village level. These are then purchased by the farmers.

The subsidy is transferred by the Indian Government to fertiliser making firms.

Una Deputy Commissioner Vikas Labroo said as a first step, they wer buying EPOS machines for the district's agriculture societies. The machines would maintain data about the quantity of fertilisers being used by the farmers.

He noted that the full data would be linked to their Aadhaar cards.

He added, "At present, we have not received directions from the Union Government as to when cash will be transferred in the accounts of the farmers and they will be asked to purchase fertilisers at market rates. We are just implementing the directions received in the first phase of the DBT for the fertiliser project."
