Australia : Innovative procurement process showcases agile development

Publish Date : 08-Dec-2016

Five local companies are collaborating with the Queensland Government to showcase their solutions to identified ICT challenges in the first round of an innovative procurement program for Queensland ICT providers.

Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy and Minister for Small Business, Leeanne Enoch, today congratulated the first five Queensland ICT businesses to complete an intensive, 12-week Testing Within Government (TWiG) program.

Each firm worked collaboratively with representatives from the Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation (DSITI) to develop working solutions to identified challenges within the department.

"Providing more opportunities for our home grown startups and SMEs with ICT solutions to work with government on innovative projects is one of the Palaszczuk Government's key priorities through the Advance Queensland agenda," Ms Enoch said.

"The TWiG program provides local firms with an opportunity to stand out from the crowd and achieve valuable end user involvement in their products development.

"Each participant has nominated a transformative digital solution to a pressing business challenge identified within DSITI.

"Working closely with representatives from the department, they have all demonstrated the viability of their products, especially their capacity to customise and scale solutions for corporate customers and public sector organisations."

Participants showcased their solutions to around 200 representatives from Queensland Government and private industry in Brisbane today.

Brisbane firms Axalon, Liquid State and Vuid, and Redcliffe joint venture MacroGIS and FlowBiz, each received $25,000 in Advance Queensland support to develop and test their products in collaboration with department personnel.

Axalon put forward their Ark sensor data platform as a self-service solution for better management and delivery of government's environmental monitoring datasets, available through the Queensland Open Data Portal.

Liquid State submitted their Carbon Editor Content Management System as a cloud-based solution for improving the effectiveness of writing and editing documents across large and complex organisations.

Vuid submitted their software solution, Rulerr, for more efficient integration and management of access privileges across large public sector organisations.

While MacroGIS and FlowBiz put forward an app as an innovative crowdsourcing solution for collecting mobile coverage information.

"We were thrilled to have this opportunity to work in partnership with an organisation the size and complexity of DSITI in perfecting our product," said Axalon co-founder Tracey Kay.

"Our collaboration has taken us through some fairly intense design iterations, resulting in a service platform that is fit for purpose and ready for release.

"It was a great pleasure for us to be able to demonstrate working software to representatives from DSITI and other Queensland Government departments, as well as corporate stakeholders, at the showcase event.

"I would encourage any other tech startup or SME with a commitment to agile product development to look closely at the next round of TWiG challenges when they are released."

The four projects will be further assessed before a final decision is made on the local companies securing a government contract.

Minister Enoch said TWiG participants retain ownership of their intellectual property, giving them maximum freedom to take their innovation to other potential end users.

A second round of TWiG challenges will be released to market in the new year.
