United Kingdom : Kier Preferred Bidder for New Sheffield School

Publish Date : 24-Feb-2017

Kier, a leading property, construction, residential and services group, has been named preferred bidder to build the new Woodside School for Sheffield City Council.

The 23m project, which is Kiers first contract awarded through the new YORbuild2 framework, will provide a new through school from nursery to sixth form pupils when completed and includes both new build and refurbishment aspects.

The scheme will see almost 9,000 sq m of new education space built while the existing Grade II listed Pye Bank School building will be refurbished, providing a further 1,800 sq m of space. When complete, the school will be able to accommodate 1,200 pupils and provide first class educational facilities.

Enabling works are due to start next month with the main construction phase beginning in the summer.

This scheme represents the biggest capital project undertaken by Sheffield City Council and adds to Kiers long-standing presence in the area.

It recently completed the new 8.5m North Active Leisure Centre in Sheffield and has worked with the council for the past 12 years providing repairs and maintenance services to council tenants.

John OCallaghan, Kier Construction Northern managing director, said: Were extremely pleased to be awarded this opportunity to provide a vital new school for Sheffield.

We deliver on average 25,000 school places every year across the north and are confident that, by working closely with the council to understand their requirements, we can build a facility the City will be proud of.

This is Kiers first contract award through the YORbuild2 framework and were looking forward to continue working with local authorities and public sector bodies across the North of England as we help to play our part in establishing the Northern Powerhouse.
Councillor Jackie Drayton, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families at Sheffield City Council, said: Im excited that we are building what will be a fantastic new school in the north-east of the city, bringing use back to a wonderful landmark building for Burngreave- the Old Pye Bank Board School, which is a Grade II listed building, to benefit the city. We look forward to working with Kier to create a superb educational facility and help achieve our ambition for Sheffield. We want every child, young person and family to achieve their full potential by raising expectations, attainment and enabling enriching environments.

I believe that working with the sponsor Reach4 Academy Trust and Kier is a wonderful opportunity to make a real difference to the life chances of many children and families in our city, and I look forward to working with them in the exciting challenge ahead.
