Singapore : Singapore to procure more German submarines

Publish Date : 19-May-2017

Adding to the two it bought in 2013, Singapore plans to procure two more submarines from Germany.

At the inaugural day of the defense and maritime exhibition IMDEX Asia in Singapore, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen announced that the two boats will replace the older submarines of the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN).

The newest submarines will be delivered from 2024 onward, with Ng calling the latest procurement 'another important step in the RSNs modernization effort'.

Ng added that the first two Type 218SG submarines from the German ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems are set to be delivered in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

The Singapore Minisitry of Defence said that building the first two Type 218SGs are progressing after the first steel cutting in 2014.

Contract value for the new submarines was not disclosed, but it had earlier been reported that the original deal was worth $1.8 billion.
