Venezuela : Bolivarian Government to Install 38 Desalination Plants in Falcon

Publish Date : 19-Sep-2017

From the sea that provides food and recreation to the population, drinking water will also be supplied to communities in coastal areas of Venezuela. Thanks to the initiative of the Revolutionary Government of the President of the Republic, Nicols Maduro; through the Ministries of Popular Power of Petroleum and for Ecosocialismo and Aguas (Minea), regional hydrological and Technical Water Tables will be installed 116 desalination plants nationwide.

Petrleos de Venezuela, SA (PDVSA), through the subsidiary CITGO in the United States, is responsible for acquiring and installing a group of such machinery to guarantee the start-up of desalination plants in regions selected by Minea. This initiative will allow thousands of inhabitants to receive the water resource.

The first desalination plant was inaugurated on September 8 in the town of Amuay, Los Taques municipality, Falcn state. This entity will operate 38 plants; three of them in a critical region such as the peninsula of Paraguan, with about 350 thousand inhabitants distributed in 3 thousand 45 square kilometers.

This project is managed by Ronald Theis, a Bariven employee and current manager of Strategic Projects in Venezuela for PDVSA and CITGO; responsible for the follow-up and start-up of the desalination plants on a national scale, along with Carlos Brett, general director of Public Policy at the Ministry of Petroleum.

"The process of converting seawater into drinking water is called reverse osmosis and every three liters of salt water processed produces a sweet one. A plant has already been activated in Amuay to serve 4 thousand people. Soon we will do it in Tiraya, Punta Cardn and Las Piedras. The Carmen Benita Snchez plant has two tanks of 25 thousand liters each with a connection to the distribution network of Hidrofalcn, explained Theis.

The acquisition contracts guarantee a maintenance year for the desalination plants. "To guarantee its sustainability it is necessary to train the neighbors in their maintenance; so that they can count on constant water. There are community workers incorporated into the operation and control of the plant, "said the manager of Strategic Projects in Venezuela for PDVSA and CITGO.

For Minea, desalination plants have many benefits: installation flexibility in agricultural and industrial communities as they require little space for installation. Likewise, the water leaving the plant does not depend on the climate; therefore it is always available in any season; which reduces the construction of dams and generates potabilization in a short time.

Falcn state will also have desalination plants in Chichiriviche, Boca de Aroa and San Juan de los Cayos. This service will boost the tourist potential of the beaches of the entity; as well as the generation of income for the regions.
