United Kingdom : E.On announces completion of EFR battery storage project

Publish Date : 12-Oct-2017

E.On is the first company to have won an Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) contract last year to announce the completion of its project after installing and connecting its 10MW battery at the Blackburn Meadows biomass plant last month.

The utility was among just eight firms to secure a combined 200MW of EFR contracts in the August 2016 tender, which drew over 1.5GW of applications.

The project, which has been housed in four 40-foot long shipping containers at the facility near Sheffield, reached completion in September, with E.On holding off on breaking the news to ensure the system was performing as expected.

David Topping, director of business heat and power solutions at E.ON, said, This is a milestone for E.ON in the new energy world and an important recognition of the enormous potential for battery solutions in the UK. Having undergone successful grid testing by National Grid we are the first EFR operator to complete the installation and bring our system online. The success of this project, two months ahead of plan, is tribute to the excellent work done by colleagues across E.ON as well as our contractors.
