Australia : Multi-million dollar Harristown High construction now underway

The artist impressions for Harristown State High Schools new $15.4 million Learning Facility and Administration Centre have been unveiled.
As part of Governing from Toowoomba/Darling Downs, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, Deputy Premier Jackie Trad and Education Minister Grace Grace visited the school to inspect construction of the new facility, which recently got underway.
Construction of the new three storey building is creating 40 jobs and is scheduled for completion before the end of 2019, ready for the 2020 school year.
The new facility at Harristown State High will include:
14 classrooms
two flexible learning areas
two training kitchens
an administration area
two car parks (one of which will accommodate 100 cars)
The Premier said there was nothing more important than the education of Queensland kids.
My government is delivering more than $55 million in school infrastructure and maintenance in the Toowoomba region in 2018-19 and we will continue to invest in the education of our children to support our growing communities, Ms Palaszczuk said.
Toowoomba schools, including Harristown State High, are benefiting from our 2020 Ready Program which is all about delivering extra classrooms and learning centres to cater for growth in our secondary schools from 2020.
I congratulate local company FK Gardner and Sons on being awarded the contract for this important project at Harristown State High.
Other local schools to benefit from 2020 Ready include Centenary Heights High, which is receiving a $10.5 million performing arts centre and extra learning spaces and Highfields State Secondary College will receive $10.7 million for eight new classrooms and a sports hall.
Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said the Palaszczuk Government was committed to investing in Queensland schools with a record $13 billion committed to education in this years budget including almost $1 billion to deliver school infrastructure across the state.
This massive investment overall is a boost for Queenslands economy and will support an estimated 2,676 full-time jobs during construction, Ms Trad said.
Its wonderful to see our growing regional communities like Toowoomba receiving the world-class education facilities our state school students need for the future.
In addition to the local 2020 Ready projects, Toowoomba State High is one of the 17 high schools across the state to benefit from our four-year, $235 million Renewing our Schools program.
Minister Grace said she was excited to see the progress of this project and looked forward to visiting the school again once the building was complete.
This project also includes converting a number of existing classrooms into specialised teaching spaces two spaces will be converted into science laboratories while a third area will be converted to become a visual arts learning space, Ms Grace said.
Our 2020 Ready initiative is about keeping up with student population growth in our high schools that resulted from the introduction Prep in 2007.
With the original half-cohort of Prep students set to graduate from high school at the end of 2019, we will have for the very first time six full year levels of students in Queensland secondary schools from 2020.
Harristown State High School Executive Principal, Ken Green, said the new building and other renovations will mark the start of an exciting new chapter for the growing school.
This project provides an excellent example of our school community working together to design a modern building that will ensure our students have access to world class facilities, Mr Green said.
We believe this new development will not only cater for our future growth in student numbers, but also be a signature building helping us to educate our students for careers in the 21st century.
Our School Parents and Citizens Association and local community have been working with my staff and the Department of Education to finalise plans for the project, and we are excited for the project to be completed and ready for the 2020 school year.
