On Wednesday 10th October 2018, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Malta to the International Atomic and Energy Agency (IAEA) Ambassador Natasha Meli Daudey signed the renewed Country Programme Framework 2018 - 2023 covering the future cooperation which will be conducted under the IAEAs Technical Cooperation Programme. Malta joined the Technical Cooperation Programme in 1999 and has benefitted greatly through numerous national projects continuous training at a local and regional level funded by the IAEA.

The IAEA is the principal United Nations nuclear watchdog. In tandem, the IAEA assists its member states in using nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes and facilitates the transfer of such technology and knowledge in a sustainable manner to member states.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela welcomed the signing of the renewed Country Programme Framework covering the period 2018-2023 and stated, this bodes well not only for the excellent relations which exist between Malta and the IAEA but also for the continued implementation of a number of national development priorities.

This agreement outlines main areas of short and medium-term technical cooperation between Malta and the IAEA. It specifically addresses national development priorities and needs where nuclear applications can play an important role. Malta has benefitted greatly from the IAEAs expertise in this area and for this cycle, the proposed projects will focus on 1) Regulatory Framework for Safety and Security 2) Human Health 3) Cultural Heritage and 4) Water and the Environment. Local authorities and departments will have the renewed opportunity to cooperate with the IAEA to fulfil their national goals. Local stakeholders include Mater Dei Hospital, Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre, Heritage Malta, Energy and Water Agency, the University of Malta, and the Radiation Protection Board.

The implementation of national projects in cooperation with the IAEA will continue to push the boundaries in these important fields which have been identified as being vital for continued development.
