Korea Republic of : ROKN to procure refurbished LOCKHEED MARTIN S-3 VIKING ASW plane
Publish Date : 12-Sep-2015
The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) will acquire renovated Lockheed Martin S-3 Viking anti-submarine warfare (ASW) plane.
The service has sanctioned the procurement of an initial 12 of the mothballed US Navy (USN) platforms, and may buy eight more units as it looks to augment its existing 16 Lockheed P-3 Orion platforms after retiring the Grumman S-2 Tracker.
The news that South Korea will move ahead with the acquisition the former USN Vikings comes two years after IHS Jane's initially announced the proposed sale at the Seoul International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition (ADEX) in October 2013.
At the time, a Lockheed Martin representative l had said that from 50 to 100 Viking airframes were stored at 'the boneyard' at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona. He said, these, still have a lot of life left in them as both ASW and maritime patrol aircraft (MPAs).
As part of any renovation process, the plane would be equipped with sonobuoys and acoustic detection systems.
While the mission system is still be decided, Lockheed Martin told IHS Jane's that the company would develop and install it.
