Japan : JAPAN starts discussions with EU on economic partnership accord

Publish Date : 16-Sep-2015

On Monday, Japan and the European Union have started discussions on completing an economic partnership agreement for free trade.

Japan and the EU, during the five-day discussions, plan to boost negotiations for achieving a broad agreement on the EPA by the end of this year, as agreed by the two sides at a summit meeting in May.

Japan, with a target to increasing exports, is aiming at the EU to scrap its 10 percent tariffs on vehicles. The EU has been demanding that Japan ease safety regulations on vehicles and food additives, claiming such rules are nontariff trade barriers.

In the railway sector, the EU claims that Japan has to advance its transparency on rolling stock procurement by government-affiliated firms, like Hokkaido Railway Co.
