Australia,Singapore : SINGAPORE receives bids from MYREPUBLIC, AIRYOTTA, & TPG TELECOM

Publish Date : 06-Sep-2016

The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore on Thursday has received offers from three companies seeking approval to become the 4th telecom services provider of the country. These three companies are fibre broadband provider MyRepublic, Australian telecom firm TPG Telecom and airYotta, which has been established just in recent times. According to the IDA, these three companies have submitted Expression of Interest Documents by the deadline of submission that ended at 5pm on September 1, 2016.

The Authority has further said that it will first evaluate the bids and then will announce the names of the pre-qualified aspirants for the New Entrant Spectrum Auction (NESA). It has added that the NESA is the initial stage to allow the entry of a potential fourth telecom operator, and is only available to interested pre-qualified parties that dont have an operational nationwide mobile network in Singapore. The next stage will involve a general auction, and the new candidate will also be allowed to join in the process.

MyRepublic has earlier revealed its strategy to become the fourth telco of Singapore, but TPG Telecom and airYotta are the new aspirants. The Ex-OMGTel executives head the newly formed airYotta.
Though OMGTel had earlier hinted its willingness to tender a bid to become Singapore's fourth telco, it had refrained from doing this by the deadline.

The airYotta Chief Executive Michael DeNoma is the former CEO of OMGTel, whereas the airYotta Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Philip Heah is the ex-OMGTel VP for Networks and Infrastructure. AirYotta on Thursday has announced in a media statement that a regulated fund, which is completely financed by an anonymous investor focused on wireless ventures, has backed the new company.

AirYotta further said, "The investor was galvanised by the companys digital-first proposition, and shares its vision for the role a new telco can play in Singapore."

The new firm has disclosed that it will roll out the first 4.5G LTE Advanced Pro network of Singapore in the event of its successful winning of the tender. The architecture of the 4.5G LTE Advanced Pro network will be similar to the 5G and will be "a critical turning point in Singapores journey towards a 5G world". Mr. Heah stated, The mobile industry is facing a major disconnect between demand and supply of mobile data capacity.

He added, "airYotta is a response to this insatiable demand for data, and will allow Singapore to realise its Smart Nation vision."

MyRepublic has disclosed that it has set a target of launching a "Pre-5G" network, with capability to deliver "better speeds, lower latency and flawless connectivity" for customers. The companys strategy involves Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) technologies, like small cells and seamless wireless handover technologies. MyRepublic had carried out a trial for its HetNet technologies in Jurong in last October.

The CEO OF MyRepublic Malcolm Rodrigues has revealed that the company is already equipped with around 80% of a mobile telecom firm's capabilities, with its present IT capacities and synergies with its existing business. Rodrigues added, "It's a logical next step for us as an Internet Service Provider to bring high-speed Internet to everyone, everywhere."
