Yemen exhibit an underdeveloped free market economy. The chief support of the economy in Yemen is furnished by oil resources but the country is trying to diversify its earnings. The economy's main exports are cotton, coffee, processed fish but oil remains largest foreign exchange earner for the country. Foodstuffs, live animals, machinery, and chemicals are imported. Important trading partners include China, the United Arab Emirates, India, and Switzerland. Yemen's GDP is supplemented by remittances from Yemenis working abroad and by large amounts of foreign aid. Future economic development depends heavily on the attraction of foreign investment to diversify the economy.
