Portugal : Environmental Fund allocated a million and 665 thousand euros to a pilot project to collect plastic packaging

The pilot project contract for the purchase and installation of non-reusable plastic beverage packaging collection equipment is signed tomorrow. With a 100% financing, in the amount of one million and 665 thousand euros, attributed by the Environmental Fund of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action, the project results from the application of a consortium led by the Portuguese Association of Industrial Mineral Water and Natural Spring (APIAM).
This equipment is intended to encourage the return of plastic beverage packaging, ensuring that it is sent for recycling and incorporated into the production of new bottles, promoting the circularity of materials.
The incentive system consists of the award of a premium to the final consumer for the return of packaging. This can be materialized in discount coupons on purchases, discounts at stores, activities or services, participation in sweepstakes or donations to social solidarity institutions.
The 23 pieces of equipment will be installed in a large commercial area in the intervention area of each of the Urban Waste Management Systems (SGRU), in the territory of Mainland Portugal. The realization of this pilot project is an opportunity to gain experience and produce lessons for the definition and implementation of the future deposit system for beverage packaging in plastic, glass, ferrous metals and aluminum, instituted by PERSU 2020+.
