Publish Date : 11-Mar-2020

The Turkish city of Konya have decided on the construction of a 26km north-south suburban line as per metro standards mainly following the alignment of the existing railway.

Konyas Governor Mr Cuneyt Orhan Toprak, Konya Metropolitan Municipalitys Mayor Mr Ugur Ibrahim Altay, and the General Manager of Turkish State Railways (TCDD) Mr Ali Ihsan Uygun signed the agreement for construction of the line.

As per plans, the double-track line is to operate from the Organised Industrial Zone, south via the airport, the new high-speed station and Konyas main station, to Yaylapinar. In total there will be 19 stations.

Execution of the Konyaray project will be done in two phases, with the 17.4km central section linking the airport and the city centre opening first. With completion of the entire line, it is expected to carry 90,000 passengers per day and will have an end-to-end journey time of 30 minutes, about half the time it currently takes by road.

Konya Metropolitan Municipality will be responsible for procurement of the trains. The city is even in plans to build a 21km metro line.
