Estonia : Estonia and Finland intensifying defence cooperation in the fields of capability development and procurements

Publish Date : 11-Mar-2020

Permanent Under Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Kristjan Prikk met in Tallinn and at Amari with Jukka Juusti, his Finnish counterpart, to discuss the deepening of defence cooperation between the two countries in the fields of procurement and training, as well improving the general exchanging of information.

According to Permanent Under Secretary Prikk, Finland is an extremely important partner for Estonia in the field of security. Since Estonia and Finland are neighbours, it is only natural to further develop defence cooperation between our two countries in the air, on land and at sea, noted Prikk.

Prikk pointed out that Estonia, in cooperation with Finland, has acquired important weapons systems and machinery, such as self-propelled K9 Thunder artillery, and, before that, air surveillance radar systems. The search for opportunities for joint procurements and joint capability development will definitely continue in the future', stated Prikk. He added that Estonia is interested in continuing cooperation with Finland and Latvia in a joint project to develop armoured transport vehicles.

Estonia has worked closely with Finland within the framework of capability development projects, and our servicemen have been able to take advantage of the expertise of the Finnish Defence Forces in the fields of armoured manoeuvring and air defence, and in developing heavy equipment maintenance.

The first self-propelled artillery units acquired together with Finland from South Korea, which should replace the 155 mm howitzers currently used by the Artillery Battalion of Estonias 1st Infantry Brigade, will arrive in Estonia this year. The neighbours also cooperate closely in the field of training: Finland has been participating for years in Estonia's large-scale Spring Storm training exercise, with Estonian servicemen, in turn, set to participate in Finlands training exercise Arrow 2020.
