Germany: Bribe In Exchange For Awarding Bid

Publish Date : 29-Oct-2009

A defence witness in the case of a hotel administrative manager accused of asking for a Dh385, 000 bribe in exchange for awarding a linen contract has denied there had been any wrongdoing. He said he was aware that bids had been invited for the contract by the Bavaria hotel but there was no possibility that the defendant had asked for a bribe. The witness is a partner in the hotel. Defendant TH, from Germany, was in court to hear the evidence. He had earlier been released on bail.

Hotel Manager had told the public prosecution that the defendant was asked to choose which companies should be invited to tender for the contract, based on their reputation and the quality of their goods. TH selected four companies including Lisa Dell, which is based in Ireland and owned by a man called Mark. The latter had an agent in Dubai.

After the bids were studied the contract was awarded to Lisa Dell for Dh5.5 million. Hotel Manager said he called the agent who said the defendant was pressing Mark to give him Dh385, 000, or seven per cent of the tender.
