Canada: Demolition Tender Awarded to Sudbury Firm
Publish Date : 11-Mar-2010
A Sudbury-area firm was chosen for a demolition project that marks the start of work on a new Canadian customs plaza at International Bridge. Nine commercial and residential buildings on Queen Street West, between Hudson and George streets, will be razed beginning later this month. Work will take five weeks. R.M. Belanger Construction of Chelmsford was selected by Federal Bridge Corp. Ltd. for the demolition project. The company submitted the lowest bid, about $365,000, of five firms.
Several Sault Ste. Marie businesses, including Avery Construction, Palmer Construction Group and Possamai Construction and Aggregates, also vied for the work. Tentative plans have the Queen Street West land used for parking spaces, inspection areas and storage. The Canadian federal government is providing $44.1 million through its Gateways and Border Crossings fund towards the new plaza. Work will take five years to complete. The new site will include seven primary inspection lanes and a new building for brokerage operations and a duty-free shop.
