TONGA : Tonga inks US $34 million contract for internet project

The Government of Tonga inked US $34 million contract with World Bank and Asian Development Bank, to perform high speed internet project in Tonga. The contract covers an underwater fibre optic cable linking Tonga to Southern Cross Cable, the main trans-Pacific link between Australia and US.
The formation and functioning of 827 km submarine cable system will operate from Tonga to Fiji. It will offer Tonga with inexpensive, accessible, information and communication technology.
The high speed internet project is likely to offer major economic and social advantages to people of Tonga. This project is expected to be operational from mid-2013.
