NEPAL : ADB grants $ 80 million loan for expanding piped water in valley
Publish Date : 21-Sep-2011
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is extending an $80 million loan to Nepal for water distribution improvements which will benefit more than 2.72 million people in the densely populated Kathmandu Valley.
According to Asian Development Bank, Water Supply Improvement Project will enlarge piped water access to many more households. With this, people of Kathmandu Valley will receive better quality water for more hours and at higher pressure.
As part of this water supply improvement project, Ministry of Physical Planning and Works will also build added bulk transmission systems and reservoirs, repair water distribution networks and boost household connections. It will also offer 24-hour supplies in about 10% of the targeted service area. This project will decrease water losses in distribution system and also boost financial and asset management capabilities of agencies managing the area.
ADB added that, this project will support other ongoing water services work of ADB and its development partners, such as the building of Melamchi tunnel.
Manoj Sharma, Urban Development Specialist of South Asia Department at ADB, said, “The project will prioritize under served areas and poor sections of the population in the Valley.”
