Publish Date : 13-Nov-2009

A top official from China\'s Jiangsu Province called for closer economic and cultural cooperation with Taiwan while promising to raise the procurements of products from the island to at least US$3 billion. Liang Baohua, secretary of the Chinese Communist Party in Jiangsu, made the remarks at the opening ceremony for the ?Jiangsu Week? and economic cooperation forum at the Grand Hotel in Taipei. Leading a 3,000-strong delegation comprised of business and industry leaders, Liang became the highest-ranking Chinese official to have visited the island so far. The trade mission is also the largest of its kind from China. Honorary chairman of the ruling Kuomintang which invited Liang to visit Taiwan, was invited to officiate at the opening ceremony along with Liang. Former Premier Hau Pei-tsun, who came from Jiangsu, was among dignitaries attending the event.

Other participants included Chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), Chairman C.K. Wang of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), and several business tycoons including Chairman Chen Wu-shyon of the Chinese National Federation of Industries (CNFI) and Chairman Terry Tai-ming Guo of the Hon Hai Precision Group, one of the leading Taiwan investors in Jiangsu. A former vice president, said the timing of Liang\'s visit was crucial for joint efforts to overcome the global economic and financial challenges. He expects the success of the group\'s visit and the continuing expansion of Taiwan investments in Jiangsu area.

Liang expressed his gratitude to the KMT for making him the first provincial secretary of the Chinese Communist Party to visit Taiwan. He said the orders to be placed with Taiwan suppliers by his delegation during the seven-day trip will amount to at least US$3 billion, higher than the figure of US$2 billion as reported earlier. Liang said increasing procurement from Taiwan companies is part of program to expand trade cooperation between Taiwan and his province.

Other major interchange programs with Taiwan will cover the fields of deepening industrial cooperation, cultural and educational cooperation, and tourism with a goal of raising the interchange visits to the mark of 100,000 people per year, he said. Liang\'s Taiwan visit coincided with a tour of the island by more than 4,000 people from Jiangsu.
