UNITED STATES : Burlington awarded $16 million in projects for treatment plants

Publish Date : 11-Oct-2011

Burlington leaders have awarded two contracts to separate construction companies for water treatment plant upgrade projects.

Haren Construction Company won a $6.8 million bid to make improvements at the East Burlington Waste Water Treatment Plant after a bidding process that began in September. The $8.5 million bid for the South Burlington Water Treatment Plant went to H.G. Reynolds, Co., Inc. Both plants will have their nutrient removal systems upgraded, to comply with the Jordan Lake Rules.

The rules were implemented by the state legislature in 2009 to reduce nitrogen and phosphorous in water flowing into Jordan Lake. So far, the city’s remained in compliance regarding the nitrogen levels, said Bob Patterson, water resources director for Burlington. The plant upfits will help reduce phosphorous levels.

The upgrades are being funded by 2011 revenue bonds. The first issuance of the bond package last year financed the improvements at Stony Creek and Lake Cammack dams. Now the city is ready to move on to the plants, since the city must meet nitrogen requirements by 2018, provided construction has begun by 2016.

“Now’s probably the best time to proceed with construction,” said Patterson. Each contract date is for 18 months, meaning both of Burlington’s waste water plants will be upgraded ahead of the required date.
