United Arab Emirates : DUBAI plans for more solar panels to meet its Expo 2020 energy demand

Publish Date : 10-Dec-2013

Dubai based Access, a consultative organization feels that nearly 200000 solar panels with 50 MW potential are required to fulfill the regions 50 per cent of event’s operational power demand utilizing on-site renewable energy sources. Dubai would require to set up solar panels amounting US$100 million to fulfill its energy requirements for Expo 2020.

Vahid Fotuhi, chief of strategic advisory at Access told "Achieving that will not be an issue, and I think they will far exceed that. If there are innovations like energy storage, you’d reach [between 2 and 4] per cent easily."

Global contest to put up solar capacity will be extreme with nearly 150 companies contended for contracts at Dubai’s first solar park for a reasonably small 13MW plant.

The regions has strategy to set up 1,000 megawatts of solar energy at a central location putting it in the association of Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Morocco and other countries with gigantic solar plans.

As per the present strategy, fraction of the solar power at Expo 2020 will be created by group of experts criss-crossing the site, which is spread out on an area of 350,000 square metres.

Access says the investment in on-site solar should be preserved subsequent to the expo and eventually save the region $10m in energy expenditure in the coming decades.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) are anticipated to float a 100MW solar park proposal in the first six months of coming year with the company raising its yearly resources to Dh20.56 billion from which Dewa would allocate Dh7.05bn in latest projects and procurement of clean coal, solar and smart grids.
