The Government of Lebanon has reportedly made three-month expansion of its agreements with the two mobile service providers - Touch and Alfa.
With this, rumors are going round that these telecom companies will carry on the network operations provided that the caretaker Cabinet stays in power.
The General Manager of Touch - Claude Bassil has authenticated the reports and stated that the telecom firm has renewed the agreements with the Lebanese Ministry of Telecommunications. The GM has added that the company will continue to operate the network in line with the terms of the previous contract.
Similarly, Claude Bassil's counterpart at Alfa - Marwan Hayek has validated the news on contract renewal and stated that the operator will maintain expansion of its services and networks adhering to the contract reached with the earlier Ministry.
As part of the terms of these agreements, both Touch and Alfa manage the operations of the mobile networks for the country. These companies only keep the fixed payments per month with them, and the rest part of the revenue they collect is deposited to the Treasury.
Lebanon has nearly 4 million mobile subscribers, according to these telecom services providers. Of this, Touch has 2.1 million users, whilst 1.8 million subscribers use Alfa's network.
Bassil has revealed that there is huge amount of mobile penetration in Lebanon, with 92% of the population using mobile. The amount of mobile penetration in the country is one of the top in the region.
Bassil has emphasized that the Ministry of Telecommunications is the lone authority to grant new investment budgets for both the mobile services companies.
